Drum sizes are quoted in kilos of dry laundry, which isn’t the easiest thing to picture. 1kg is roughly one full outfit, if that helps. Here’s how the sizes map to real houses.
If you’re between sizes, go bigger. A half-full big drum washes fine; an overstuffed small one doesn’t rinse properly. Bigger drums also mean fewer cycles a week, and that’s what running costs follow.

The Laundry Never Stops
A 10kg or bigger drum swallows a king duvet and turns five loads a week into three. The big drums start around the €400 mark and run up to 20kg for houses where the laundry pile never really goes down. Fewer, fuller loads also cost less to run per kilo, so the bigger drum often costs less to live with than the small one it replaced.

A 6 or 7kg drum washes a week’s clothes for one or two people without running half empty. Compacts are the cheapest way in, starting under €300. The very cheapest of them carry an E energy label where the machines a little above them are A-rated, so check the label against how often you wash before the sticker price decides it.

Nearly every modern machine has a 14 or 15 minute quick programme, but on some that’s for 1.5 to 2kg of lightly soiled clothes, about one gym bag with no towels. The real time savers wash a full load fast. Beko’s Quick Programme does 8kg in 28 minutes, Blomberg’s fast full load is under 30, and Samsung’s Super Speed does 9kg in 39.

If you already know the type you’re after, jump straight to the compact washing machines, large capacity washing machines, smart washing machines or quick wash washing machines. We also carry a small range of integrated washing machines that hide behind a kitchen door. Want washing and drying in one box? Washer dryers are their own section, as are tumble dryers and stacking kits if you’d rather keep the two machines separate.
What to Look for When You’re Comparing Machines
- Spin speed. 1400rpm is the standard and leaves clothes noticeably drier than 1200, which means less time on the line or in the dryer.
- The energy label. Most of our machines are A-rated, using roughly 0.41 to 0.49 units per cycle. Lower letters use more, and a bargain sticker price can quietly hand the saving back through your electricity bill.
- Programmes you’ll actually use. Cottons, eco, a quick option and a delicates cycle cover nearly everything real life produces. Sixty programmes look great on the box, but most people settle into about four.
- Warranty. Some Bosch, Samsung and Blomberg models carry 5 year warranties, and Miele guarantees its motors for 25. Always be on the lookout for free extended warranty promotions!
- Measure the gap. Washing machines are all about 60cm wide, but depth usually grows with the drum: a 12kg machine sits deeper than a 7kg. Measure your space before you order and if you have any questions just ask!
What a Wash Actually Costs
That’s at 38c a unit, the Electric Ireland standard rate in July 2026. With the typical six years of use, before most people just want a new machine with extra features, an E-rated machine costs a couple about €175 more to run than an A-rated one, and a family of four about €340 more. Both are more than the cheaper initial purchase price saved. Rates and label figures move, so treat these as ballpark.

Plumbing the new machine in is a service we only offer in Carlow, Kilkenny and Waterford currently.
Recycling
No matter where you’re based or what washing machine you buy, we’ll take your old machine back for recycling free of charge. The old one just needs to be disconnected, empty and ready for the driver. You can even drop your old machine to any of our stores for free too, no purchase necessary.
Washing Machines by Budget
Under €350 buys the basics done properly, though spin speeds drop to 1000 or 1200 at the very bottom. €350 to €500 is the family sweet spot, where 1400 spin and A ratings are standard and Wi-Fi starts appearing. €500 to €800 adds bigger drums and smart features. Above €800 you’re into Miele, which guarantees its motors for 25 years, and Bosch.
The brands sort roughly the same way. Candy, PowerPoint, Belling, Beko and Hoover hold the value end, while Blomberg, Electrolux, Haier, Hisense and Samsung fill the middle. Bosch, Neff and Miele are the top. None of it is a definite line with brands having models across a few budget options.

For one or two people, 6 to 7kg does the week without running half empty. Families of three or four want 8 to 9kg, which also handles a double duvet. Five or more, or regular king-size bedding, and a 10kg or bigger drum earns its keep. If you’re between sizes, go bigger: an overstuffed drum doesn’t rinse properly.

Clothes come out of a 1400 noticeably drier, so they spend less time on the line or in the tumble dryer. 1200 machines are usually cheaper and a touch quieter on the final spin. If you rely on a dryer, the faster spin pays for itself in dryer time.

At about 38c per unit, an A-rated machine costs 16 to 19c a cycle. That works out around €44 a year for a couple washing five times a week, or about €89 for a family of four doing ten. Machines with lower energy labels cost more per wash, and the label on each product page shows the exact consumption figure.

Yes to the old machine, anywhere in the Republic: we collect it free when we deliver, as long as it’s disconnected, empty and ready for the driver. Installation is more limited. We plumb machines in for €39.99, but only in Carlow, Kilkenny and Waterford. Outside those three counties you’ll need your own plumber.

Freestanding machines stand on their own and move house with you; nearly everything we stock is freestanding. Integrated machines sit behind a matching kitchen door, which looks seamless but costs more for the same spec and is harder to replace. Buy integrated for the look, freestanding for everything else.
