Start with the Size, Not the Spec
Screen size shapes how happy you’ll be with a TV more than any panel technology does. The quick rule: measure how far you sit from where the screen will go. For a 4K picture, a viewing distance of around 1.2 times the screen size is comfortable, and further back than that the extra detail starts going to waste.
At 2.1 m, a 55 inch screen is the comfortable fit, about 1.22 m wide.

Those distances are a guide, and in practice the most common regret we hear is buying too small: a 55 inch screen looks big when you’re stood next to it in the shop and normal on your wall within a week. If you’re stuck between two sizes, the bigger one is usually the way to go.

The Bright Sitting Room
Big windows and a south facing room wash out a dim screen and make dark scenes impossible to see on most screens. To make sure you can see everything brightness is your top priority: a QLED or Mini LED panel punches through daylight and some Samsung QLEDs have an anti-reflective screen.

Movie Nights and Picture Quality
OLED TVs have pixels (the millions of dots of light that make up the picture) that can each turn on and off. In a dark room you can’t see where the edges of the screen stop in dark scenes, making the picture jump out. Other TVs either have the entire screen lit, so black looks grey, or can only turn off sections of the picture.
With OLED if a part of the picture is supposed to be black, it is completely black. This means incredibly rich contrast and colour which makes OLED the choice for anyone serious about picture quality and colour accuracy.

A 32 inch or smaller set handles the kitchen or a bedroom, streams the same apps as the big one, and hangs off a standard bracket. Going a step up, a 40 inch Full HD set or a 43 inch 4K TV is plenty for a snug or a spare room.

Measure how far you sit from where the screen will go. At around two metres, a 55 inch 4K TV is comfortable; at two and a half metres a 65 inch suits; past three metres you can carry a 75 inch or bigger without it feeling like the front row of the cinema. If you’re between two sizes, the bigger one is usually the right call.

OLED lights every pixel individually, so blacks are genuinely black and contrast is the best you can buy. QLED is a brighter LED panel with a colour boosting layer, better for bright rooms and much cheaper. Mini LED is a QLED style panel with thousands of tiny backlight zones, which closes most of the contrast gap to OLED while keeping LED brightness. Films in a dark room favour OLED; a sunny room favours QLED or Mini LED.

A modern 55 inch 4K TV draws roughly 60 to 100 watts. At four hours a night and 38c a unit, the Electric Ireland standard rate in July 2026, that’s somewhere between €33 and €55 a year. Big bright OLED and Mini LED screens run a bit dearer, and a small bedroom set barely registers on a bill. Rates change, so treat these as rough guidance rather than a promise.

Nearly all. Anything from Samsung, LG, Hisense or Toshiba here runs its own smart platform with the main apps built in, including RTÉ Player, Netflix and YouTube. A handful of small budget sets are basic HD Ready screens without apps, and they’re priced accordingly. If you’ve an older non smart TV at home, a streaming stick or box adds the apps without replacing the screen.

Above 43 inches, yes, and almost every screen at that size is 4K now anyway. Below 32 inches, Full HD is fine, because at normal viewing distance the extra pixels are hard to pick out.
